40th Solid Mechanics Conference

Dear Colleagues and Friends,
on behalf of the international Advisory Board, the Scientific Committee and the organizing Committee it is our great pleasure to cordially invite you, together with accompanying persons, to attend the anniversary 40th Solid Mechanics Conference SOLMECH 2016, scheduled for August 29 7 September 2 2016 in Warsaw, Poland. We pay much attention to keep traditionally high scientific standard of the SOLMECH conferences and We count on your contribution in our efforts organize a successful meeting.

At the same time we are doing our pest to create the possibility for exchange of ideas and research information in a pleasant and friendly atmosphere accompanied by the Chopin music in his birthplace Żelazowa Wola.
The information on the Conference is given on the conference webpage.
We lookforward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Yours sincerely,

Ryszard Pęcherski

Going To An Academic Conference? Here Are Some Tips

Very good tips not only for participants but also for conference oragnizers.

Of course, this is true of basically everybody in academia. That’s the nature of the beast, as it were– getting a Ph.D. requires you to become the World’s Leading Expert in a subject that nobody else cares about to anywhere near that extent. Getting a faculty position demands that you pursue research interests that don’t quite line up with anyone else’s (while not being too far away from the consensus of what’s interesting enough to be funded and published). We’re all unique and special here, which means none of us are actually that special, so we might as well offer whatever we have.

Modeling of Localized Inelastic Deformation

This course provides an overview of modeling approaches used in the mechanics of inelastic materials and structures, with special attention to the objective description of highly localized deformation modes such as cracks or shear bands. It is one of the RILEM educational courses. In 2014 it attracted 21 participants from 9 European countries.
In 2015, attendance of the course can be combined with participation in CIVIL-COMP 2015 (15th Int. Conf. on Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering Computing), which takes place in the same building of the Czech Technical University in Prague on September 1-4. On top of that, on Saturday, September 5, you can watch the Birell Grand Prix, a night race downtown Prague with up to 9000 runners (you can even be one of them …).
