Below is the Professor’s short bio:

Dr. Shun-Peng Zhu, Professor in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), China. He received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from UESTC in 2011 and was honored as PIF Fellow of Politecnico di Milano, Italy from 2016 to 2018 and a research associate at the University of Maryland, the United States in 2010.

His research which has been published in scholarly journals and edited volumes, over 100 peer-reviewed book chapters, journals, and proceedings papers, explores the aspects: fatigue reliability design; probabilistic Physics of Failure modeling; multi-physics damage modeling and life prediction for engineering components/materials.

He received the Award of Merit of ESIS-TC12 in 2019, Polimi International Fellowship in 2016, 2nd prize of the National Defense Science and Technology Progress Award of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China in 2014, Hiwin Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2012, Best Paper Awards of several international conferences and Elsevier Outstanding Reviewer Awards.

He is an Elsevier Most Cited Chinese researcher in the field of Safety, Risk, Reliability, and Quality since 2018, and serves as guest editor, editorial board member of several international journals, and Springer book series.

Biography Summary

Grzegorz (Gregory) Glinka is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Waterloo. He specializes in fracture and fatigue of steel structures and mechanical engineering machinery, and has also acted as a United Nations expert. Professor Glinka’s research interests include fracture of materials, fatigue of structures, multiaxial fatigue and creep of engineering materials, computer aided design, FEM-elastic-plastic stress-strain analysis and reliability. He is also interested in weight functions and structural modeling for stress intensity factors. Professor Glinka’s recent research activities include the modelling of fatigue crack growth under random loading and fatigue optimization of welded structures.

He has published over 160 related articles in technical journals and textbooks and also teaches several upper year Mechanical and Mechatronics engineering courses at the university.

Fatigue strength models — From Basquin law to full-range relations

“Fatigue strength models — From Basquin law to full-range relations”.

José António Fonseca de Oliveira Correia (José A.F.O. Correia), born 1984 in Peso da Régua, Portugal, is a Researcher and an Invited Professor of INEGI and CONSTRUCT/FEUP of the University of Porto (Portugal). Since 2018, he is a Guest Teacher at the Engineering Structures Department of the Delft University of Technology (Netherlands). He is an Invited Professor at the structural mechanics’ section of the University of Coimbra (since 2016/09). He obtained the degrees BSc (2007) and MSc (2009) in Civil Engineering by the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD). He is a specialist in steel and composite (steel and concrete) construction by the University of Coimbra in 2010. He is a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering/Structures Engineering by the University of Porto in 2015.

He is co-author of more 150 scientific journal papers in the most relevant scientific journals devoted to structural integrity, fatigue and fracture of engineering materials and structures, 200 proceedings in international and national conferences, congresses and workshops, 6 book chapters and 5 books.

He was/is supervisor of doctoral and master’s dissertations in the areas of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (Structural Mechanics) — 15 Ph.D. (2 completed; 13 ongoing) and 34 MSc. (30 completed; 4 ongoing).

He was/is also team member of the organization and participation in approved national (Portugal) and European research projects (17 research projects, >6.500.000,00€). He was/is coordinator of 3 R&D projects and consulting services (university extension) budgeted in 300.000,00€ and 100.000,00€, respectively. In business activities, he was involved in approved investment projects budgeted in more than 720.000,00€.

In 2017, he was appointed as a chairman of the technical committee called “ESIS TC12 – Risk analysis and safety of large structures and components” of the European Structural Integrity Society (ESIS). He is a member of technical committees, CEN TC250 SC3 WG 1-9 Fatigue and CEN TC250 SC3 WG 1-10 Fracture, of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).

He is a member of editorial board of 25 scientific journals, editor-in-Chief and Section Editor of 8 Scientific Journals, Book Series and Sub-Series. He received more than 18 awards, grants and scholarships.

Grzegorz Lesiuk awrded by ESIS

At the last meeting of the Technical Committee TC 12 (Risk Analysis and Safety of Large Atractions and Components) of the ESIS (European Structural Integrity Society) dr inż. Grzegorz Lesiuk received the Merit Award for his work for the ESIS technical committee and scientific contribution to the international conference IRAS 2019 associated with TC 12 ESIS.

Dr Lesiuk received the prize during the gala of the IRAS 2019 conference, where the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Tomasz Nowakowski, was also present.

New member of the International Association for Hydrogen Energy Codes and Standards Division

During the meeting of The First International Forum on Hydrogen Codes, Standards and Safety, which took place in Foshan (China) on 12-13.06.2019 dr inż. Paweł Gąsior was appointed to the International Association for Hydrogen Energy Codes and Standards Division.

The aim of this organization is to use the results of the latest scientific research and best engineering practices to develop and harmonize standards / legal regulations (RCS, Regulation-Codes-Standards) in the area of increasing the safety of using “hydrogen” technologies in the power industry.

It was established in 2016 and brings together researchers from the USA, Japan, and the UK. Britain, China, France, Canada, Germany, Poland. Her works are currently chaired by Prof. Jinyang Zheng (Zhejiang University).

Cooperation with Portuguese Academic Institutions

Rita Dantas

In the framework of the cooperation with the universities of Porto and Coimbra, we will host two people (PhD Student Bruno Pedrosa from Coimbra) and Ms. Rita Dantas from the University of Porto.

We will host them from 01.03.2019-30.05.2019. The scientific supervisors will be Dr Grzegorz Lesiuk and Prof. Mieczysław Szata (Dr Lesiuk is also the supervisor of Ms. Rita Dantas in Porto).

Guests will actively participate in experimental research conducted under the supervision of Dr Lesiuk. We expect that they will present the results of their research at one of the cyclical seminars organized by our Department.

We hope that the positive effects of the cooperation will result in an intensive personal exchange.

Prof. Boccaccini: visiting professor in Wrocław, Poland

Following an invitation of the “VISITING PROFESSORS” program funded by ‘Scientiae Wratislavienses’ of the City of Wroclaw, Poland, Prof. Boccaccini will visit Wrocław University of Science and Technology, on 22-24 May 2017. The program of the visit includes four lectures by Professor Boccaccini, namely:

  1. Synthesis and characterization of biomaterials incorporating biologically active ions,
  2. Bioactive nanocomposites – progress and challenges,
  3. Bioactive Glasses in Soft Tissue Repair. What Do We Know So Far? 
  4. Biofabrication approaches and Bioactive Materials for Tissue Engineering and Cancer Research: Progress and Challenges.

The visit will involve also meetings with faculty and discussion about collaborative research between Institute of Biomaterials, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Department of Mechanics, Materials Science and Engineering (host: Dr. Justyna Krzak) at Wrocław University of Science and Technology.
