Ruchome automaty komórkowe wykorzystujemy do modelowania wzrostu defektów oraz pękania materiałów kruchych.

Pękanie ceramiki
Klasyczne automaty komórkowe  stosujemy do opisu zrywania włókien w kompozycie. Zakładamy,  że wytrzymałość kompozytu zależy przede wszystkim od zbrojenia, czyli włókien. Dlatego modelując proces wzrostu uszkodzeń materiału koncentrujemy się na procesie zrywania włókien, a nie osnowy.
